KomatsuKomatsu is a long established Japanese crawler manufacturer which like Caterpillar much of its production has been directed towards bulldozers, the company was founded in 1917 and serious production began in 1947 with the D50 series bulldozer, it was powered by Komatsu’s own 60 HP 4D120 engine. By June 1970 Komatsu had made over 50,000 D50 machines, the current Komatsu range includes 23 crawlers including the world’s largest D575A-2 super. The business has diversified such that it now manufactures construction, mining and military equipment as well as industrial equipment. Komatsu is the world’s second largest manufacturer of construction equipment and mining equipment after Caterpillar, however in Japan and China it is the market leader.

Komatsu/Cummins Joint Venture

KCEC – Komatsu-Cummins Engine Company was established in 1993 and in 1995 commenced production of engines 3.3 litre to 8.3 litre diesel engines based on the Cummins 4B, 6B and 6C engines which were fitted into PC200 hydraulic excavators, D65 bulldozers, WA380 wheel loaders and other Komatsu machines, this engine was so successful that by 2010 over 500,000 engines have been produced.
